Velvetnirvana

In a chronological arc that extends from 1965 (the year of The Velvet Underground’s first public performances) to 1994 (the year Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain died), Velvetnirvana is an exhibition that explores the iconographic universe of those decades through António Neto Alves’ collection. Bringing together photos, books, posters, fanzines , flyers, magazines and memorabilia, this exhibition showcases the vital importance of words and pictures as meaning makers and catalysts for communication style ruptures. From the ephemeral nature of pieces of paper which were not designed to last to works of art in the most conventional sense of the term (from James Welling to Raymond Pettibon), Velvetnirvana offers an indexical cartography that allows us to revisit, reformulate and create new stories and narratives about what defines us – in a more obvious or oblique way – contemporaneously.
