The Passion
Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir/Romeo Castellucci
When staging The Passion according to St. Matthew,by Bach, Romeu Castellucci refuses any attempt to illustrate, seeking rather a new meaning for the revelation. A number of situations allows, ultimately, to find an option when confronted with the words of the Bible and the deep essence of Bach’s composition. A series of elements appear, one after another, as pure objects of contemplation, without any technical device.
They are presented to us as “stones”, capable of condensing an attitude of deep listening. Each one can decide to surrender himself to listening, not to look directly, to let himself get lost, or perhaps to incline even more to feel human suffering.
