Wonderful Town

On June 21, Tivoli BBVA Theater will host Wonderful Town, a musical in concert version produced by Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. With text by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov, based on autobiographical stories by Ruth McKenney, and musical direction by Joana Carneiro, this production brings to the stage the stories of sisters Ruth and Eileen McKenney. Ruth McKenney was an American writer and journalist who humorously narrated the experiences with her sister Eileen, who left the countryside for the great New York city in search of opportunities and success.
Originally published as a series of short stories in The New Yorker, My Sister Eileen was published in book form in 1938, and later adapted under the same name into a play, a radio play, two films, a CBS television series, and it was also the basis for Leonard Bernstein’s musical Wonderful Town.
In Portugal, the production of Wonderful Town features Laura Pitt-Pulford and Lara Martins in the roles of sisters Ruth and Eileen, and also features Luís Rodrigues, Mário Redondo, Diogo Oliveira and Sérgio Martins in the cast, the Choir of Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra.
