The body made sweet

Until August 10, Museu de Lisboa – Santo António presents an exhibition dedicated to traditional Portuguese sweets and their rich and expressive connection with the senses, whether of the elite, well illustrated in conventual sweets, or popular, present in pilgrimage sweets and festivals of the liturgical calendar.

Modelled in a suggestive way, sugar, almonds and eggs take on the shape of body parts or states of mind, bridging the gap between daily experiences charged with a deep religiosity and the earthly and material reality of sensations and the nature of the human body. The work of women above all, the heritage of traditional Portuguese sweets is characterised by the paradoxical way in which it combines body and spirit, sacred and profane, desire and sublimation.
