Luigi Ghirri
Obra aberta

Obra Aberta is the first exhibition in Lisbon of the work of Italian artist Luigi Ghirri (1943–1992), gathering seventy-nine photographs produced during the 1980s. This new selection of works was guided by the ideas in Ghirri’s 1984 essay The Open Work, as well as by the structure of the estate itself, mindful of clear tendencies and affinities that recur throughout the archive. Even if these images appear in different groups of work, from different moments throughout the decade, they all come together under Paesaggio Italiano, which, much more than a finished series, was both manifest and metaphor for the totality of Ghirri’s work: an open work, a new way for photography and for looking at the world—in “continuous dialogue between what has already occurred and what is still to come.”
