A Kitchen in the Museum
On the centenary of Querubim Lapa

This exhibition marks the centenary of the birth of Querubim Lapa (1925-2016), one of the most important Portuguese ceramists. This is the reconstruction of the kitchen that the artist designed, in 1988/1989, for an apartment located on Rua dos Correeiros, in Lisbon, and which was acquired for the National Tile Museum in 2023.
Querubim Lapa revealed, in this work conceived as a total work of art, another side of his multifaceted artistic profile. Developing an imaginary associated with food and desire, full of traces of humor and eroticism, he privileged the language of drawing and painting on the flat surface of the tile, expressing his mastery of the chromatic values of ceramics and trompe l’oeil games, combined with a reinterpretation of the work of other artists.
In addition to the kitchen with its original tile covering, the exhibition includes studies and drawings made by the artist, as well as a scale model of the space, a piece from the Lisbon Museum.
