A plot/ A scandal

Initially scheduled for April of last year, Ligia Lewis’s Lisbon debut at TBA is A Plot / A Scandal, a show that invokes and ridicules specters of history and embodied memory, bringing to the stage ghosts of real protagonists from stories of exploitation and oppression. Interweaving historical, episodic, political, and mythical narratives, Lewis draws inspiration from the lives of Maria Olofa (Wolofa), leader of the 1521 Santo Domingo slave rebellion, Cuban artist and revolutionary José Antonio Aponte, and her great-grandmother, Lolón Zapata, a Black resistance fighter.

In this haunting, the English word “plot” takes on a triple meaning: the structure of a story; an allusion to property relations and “land parcels” theorized by Enlightenment thinker and slave trade beneficiary John Locke; and a plan or conspiracy that seeks escape and revenge. For Ligia Lewis, scandals are incidents where fantasy and pleasure take center stage. Seeking to determine who this pleasure is intended for and at what cost, the choreographer’s new plot explores the stage where scandals multiply.

In English with Portuguese surtitles.
