O Lugar do Torreão – The Turret Place
Image of Lisbon
This exhibition tells the story of three buildings located roughly in the same place but which succeed one another in time: a space of privilege, right in the heart of the city and the country’s power center.
This chronologically organized exhibition starts with the original 17th century turret – built by D. Manuel I for defensive purposes – and explores its successive transformations until the 1755 earthquake. With the reconstruction of the city, the building was relocated to Praça do Comércio and complemented by another turret at the opposite end. Curated by Nuno Senos, the exhibition also comprises the present and future of this building, represented by a scale model of the renovation project to be launched after this exhibition. Engravings, drawings, paintings and other graphic materials illustrate this iconographic symbol of the city of Lisbon. Models, furniture and archaeological remains are also included.
