Il trovatore

The intense musical beauty of Il trovatore has raised fervent expressions of admiration. Premiered in 1853, it is the second opera of the «Popular Trilogy». The libretto, considered confusing and excessive, tells, roughly, the story of the gypsy Azucena, who, driven mad by the death of her mother, having been burned for witchcraft, throws her own son into the fire.

Enrico Caruso used to say that, for a successful performance of this opera, the four greatest singers in the world are needed.

Stefano Vizioli returns São Carlos theater, where he made his directorial debut in 1988 with Manon Lescaut. Portuguese interpreters will defend the two main female roles: Cristiana Oliveira will sing her second Leonora verdiana; Cátia Moreso will be Azucena.
