Material Memory

Memória Material (Material Memory) reflects on the ways in which material culture holds, transmits, and transforms memory across time. It points to the notion that matter – tiles, ceramics, surfaces – acts as a vessel of both personal and collective memory.
Through their respective practices, Add Fuel and PichiAvo investigate how visual and material traditions become embedded in cultural identity. Visual artist and illustrator Add Fuel, known for his reinterpretations of Portuguese azulejo tilework, approaches these themes through the lens of personal memory and everyday visual patterns. The spanish duo of artists PichiAvo, drawing from classical Greco-Roman sculpture and mythology, engage with the wider structures of collective memory and cultural inheritance. Together, the artists present a dialogue between ornament and symbolism, history and contemporary expression.
