Pavilhão Julião Sarmento
Take 1

Pavilhão Julião Sarmento, a new contemporary art center, opens on June 4. A meeting point for a programme that goes beyond exhibitions, this space proposes the encounter of visual arts with cinema, literature, music or fashion, reflecting the transversal spirit that characterized the life and work of the portuguese artist Julião Sarmento (Lisbon, 1948-2021).

The inaugural exhibition, Take 1, presents a selection of works from Sarmento’s collection and uses a cinematographic metaphor – the “first take” – to mark the beginning of an exhibition journey that will unfold in multiple readings. The exhibition proposes two major thematic groups: Art and Life, centered on friendship, love, sharing and celebration between artists; and Space and Architecture, revealing the artist’s fascination with inhabit, the construction of architectural design and materiality.

Among the artists represented are fundamental names in international contemporary art such as Marina Abramović, Ernesto Neto, Robert Morris, Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias, Rui Chafes, Richard Long, Lawrence Weiner, Ângela Ferreira, John Baldessari, Rita McBride, among many others.
