What is an Ornament?

The debate over ornamentation and its elusive nature has been crucial in defining its key turning points in the history of architecture. Ornaments have never disappeared, they simply evolved into various forms – whether by inclusion, rejection or reinvention – as a mirror of prevailing theoretical positions. Only by observing the way ornaments relate to or coexist with architecture can we detect historical changes, sudden accelerations or nostalgic returns.

Since ornamentation in recent years has been associated with the growing hegemony of digital architecture, this figurative reality has made construction uniform. This results in a dramatic loss of complexity and, ultimately, in its trivialization as mere decoration.
