Thumbscrew, the trio formed by Mary Halvorson, Michael Formanek and Tomas Fujiwara, which The Wire magazine considers one of the “essential contemporary jazz groups”, continues to find ways to stay creatively alive and vibrant.

Wings Beat, from 2024, is an example of how a complicity deepened over many years makes it possible to start from a further point each time; likewise, Fujiwara’s recent expansion of the sound palette, incorporating the vibraphone to the sound resources, offers new colours to the compositions of the three. From the outset, this has been their process: they gather in a room, bringing their individual ideas, and develop them together, establishing an incomparable collective signature.
