Il Trovatore
Opera by Verdi

Premiered in 1853, Il Trovatore is an opera in four acts, based on the Spanish play El trovador (1836) by António Garcia Gutiérrez. Il Trovatore tells the story of the gypsy Azucena, who, driven mad by the death of her mother, ordered to burn for witchcraft, makes the mistake of throwing her own son into the fire instead of the son of the count who condemned her mother to the stake. The protagonist, Manrico, a typically romantic hero, considers himself Azucena’s son and is in love with Leonora, a lady of the court, who responds to him with the same feelings. His opponent is the Count of Luna, powerful, cruel and rejected by Leonora.
