Feijoada

Feijoada is a dish composed of beans and meat, a typical Sunday meal, a symbol of Brazilian hospitality. Surrounded by musicians, dancers and performers, choreographer Calixto Neto invites the audience to experience the preparation of a feijoada in real time. The flavours of the cooking process mingle with samba dances and songs as well as personal and political stories.
What is the cheapest meat on the market now? Where do the inequalities that characterise Brazilian society come from? Which bodies are subject to violence? And in what other ways can the story of feijoada as a traditional dish be told? In this roda de samba, a type of gathering where people play music and dance in a circle, rhythm and movement become the common language.

The show was created in 2021 and is presented at Alkantara Festival in a new version. Following an invitation from the festival and in collaboration with the Teatro Municipal do Porto, Calixto Neto invited performers and musicians living in Portugal to join the project, creating a mixed cast between members of the original team and local artists.
