The Show Must Go On

Jérôme Bel’s The Show Must Go On dissects the mechanisms of the spectacle by putting on stage 20 performers and a DJ who plays top-40 hits of the last decades, including songs by The Beatles, David Bowie, Edith Piaf, Lionel Richie, and Queen. Playing with dance conventions and exploring a minimalist style, Bel radically puts his show in the hands of the audience. The show’s magic comes from the fact that the artist gives us the necessary time and space to discover beauty and interest in the simplest of scenic proposals. The Show Must Go On was staged in Lisbon a year after its world premiere (2002 Danças na Cidade festival) and returns in a reassembled version with a Portuguese cast.
