Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith

Correspondences is an ongoing collaborative project and conversation between Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith that has spanned over 10 years and multiple geographies, revealing the sonic footprints left by poets, filmmakers, revolutionaries and extraordinary events that have taken place in specific locations.

Soundwalk Collective’s founder, Stephan Crasneanscki, has explored remote places around the world to extensively record and collect sounds to establish a grammar underpinned by experimental instrumental compositions. All in an effort to create a musical space for Patti Smith to inhabit with her own poetry and voice. This ongoing resonance between the artists is amplified by extensive recordings and studio experiments.

From a collaboration with TBA21–Academy, which explores the destructive impact of seismic pneumatic cannons and human interventions in the oceans, the resilience of Nature in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, the decentralised societies imagined by Peter Kropotkin, the wastelands of Pasolini’s last night – the pieces presented are an immersive audiovisual journey, a trip to a sound cinema, a soundscape of an invisible film.

Correspondences consists of live films as well as director’s cuts and is performed by Stephan Crasneanscki and Simone Merli from Soundwalk Collective, Patti Smith, Diego Espinosa Cruz Gonzalez, Lucy Railton and Nicolas Becker. Images by Pedro Maia.
