Lisboa Ainda / Still Lisbon

Perspectives on the quarantined city

Lisboa Ainda / Still Lisbon

José Fernandes, Pedro Nunes, Luís Miguel Sousa and Tiago Miranda managed to capture, through their lens, the essence and beauty of a confined city. The result of these photographic projects can be seen in Lisboa Ainda/Still Lisbon, an exhibition held at Palácio Pimenta’s Black Pavillion which brings together four different perspectives on the city during the lockdown. The images, which reveal a profound change in the experience of a city during the pandemic, are of human suffering and grief. In the exhibition, which is divided into four groups, each photojournalist guides the visitor through a still Lisbon. Pedro Nunes photographed Lisbon on the first Monday morning of the first week of quarantine, showing a city where nothing happens. Luís Miguel Sousa returned to places where he had previously photographed hordes of tourists, using the same framing to capture the contrast and show the volatile nature of reality. Tiago Miranda drove through the city and photographed it from the car window, revealing it as a non-place. Finally, José Fernandes captures the darkness of Lisbon with light. Commissioned by Rita Palla Aragão, this exhibition also features a room dedicated to Manuel Alegre’s poem about the city during the lockdown – after which the show was named – as well as excerpts from poems by Manuela de Freitas, Maria Teresa Horta, and Sophia de Mello Breyner.
