La Valse + The Rite of Spring

The National Ballet Company (Companhia Nacional de Bailado – CNB) presents a double program with a short film by João Botelho and the “historical” ballet The Rite of Spring.
La Valse: At a time when Europe’s ties are being constantly reassessed, CNB challenges a choreographer and a film director to explore Ravel’s La Valse and envision a cinematic experience focusing on the movement of bodies. Directed by João Botelho, choreographed by Paulo Ribeiro.
The premiere of The Rite of Spring, on May 29, 1913, caused a huge scandal and booted this work into oblivion, but eventually it became a landmark in the history of dance. More than a century later, CNB artists dance Nijinski’s play, with music by Stravinsky.
