La Sylphide is considered the first romantic ballet in dance history. Although some of its components, such as the use of tips, long white muslin skirts and the use of characters who evoke supernatural beings were not a novelty then, it is with La Sylphide that these elements gain a greater dimension and become synonymous with romantic ballet.
