Evil – Divine Drunkenness
Marlene Monteiro Freitas
Evil was for a long time personified by the Devil – or the Antichrist, Satan, Leviathan, Lucifer – but also symbolized by the Witch, Mage, Woman, Animal, Hybrid, Mutant and many others. We find references to it in the Bible, we find it depicted as the central subject of literary and artistic creations, and we encounter it in social and moral discourses. In time, the nature of evil would extend to the ideas of social injustice, violence, disease, capitalism, the atomic bomb, pollution. Here, Evil is divided into judges and jurors, more like a choir under a spell. However, when viewed from a distance, their souls are ecstatic, confined to a space that is too small.
