Earthkeeping / Earthshaking

The exhibition Earthkeeping / Earthshaking – Art, Feminisms and Ecology seeks to assert the pioneering role played by numerous artists in the triangulation between art, ecology and feminisms, while also problematizing the operationality of their contributions today. Taking the 13th edition of the American feminist art magazine Heresies – which in 1981 asked ‘ What can women do about the disastrous direction the world is taking?’ – as a starting point and as a historical and political archive, this exhibition brings together several works and documentary material by artists such as Bonnie Ora Sherk, Cecilia Vicuña, and Faith Wilding. These artists questioned, in the 70s and early 80s, the relationship between the individual or collectivity and the natural environment, the dichotomies between nature and culture, the traditional association of the feminine with the forces of nature, and the complex relationships between advanced capitalism, colonial histories, and environmental destruction. The exhibition also features artists from younger generations, with works created specifically for this show, such as Mónica de Miranda or Alexandra do Carmo, whose oeuvre displays a specific concern with this topic in present times.
