Christmas Concert at Jerónimos
Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa

Mozart’s most famous religious work is, by far, his Requiem. But the Austrian composer has written several other religious-inspired works that are more appropriate for the Christmas season. Most of these works date back to the beginning of his career. Such is the case of the motet Exsultate, Jubilate, written in Milan for one of the most virtuous ‘castrati’ of his era, Venanzio Rauzzini. Another such work is the motet for sopranoKommet her, ihr frechen Sünder / (Come, impudent sinner). Or we could mention one of the instrumental sonatas which were played during the mass and the concert aria for soprano Laudate Dominum, from Vesperae solennes de Dominica, one of the last religious compositions written for the Salzburg archbishopric. Later, in 1781, Mozart settled in Vienna, married Constanze, and their first child was born. During a visit back home to show grandfather Leopold his new family, Mozart stayed for a few days in Linz, halfway between Vienna and Salzburg. It was enough time to write Symphony No. 36, which is known by the name of that city.
