Apollon
Florentina Holzinger

How can circus and ballet be combined? Florentina Holzinger answers this question with physical virtuosity and a provocative quest for the perfect woman.
In Apollon, the Austrian choreographer and an all-female cast revisit George Balanchine’s ballet Apollon Musagète, a patriarchal story about the god Apollo, who in this version is removed from his throne with a smile on his face. Holzinger uses this neoclassical play as a starting point for an uncompromising gaze − both for the audience and the artists − at voyeurism, body worship, sexism, and artistic genius. With an aesthetic approach that combines freakshow strategies with 1960s live art, Apollon offers a fresh perspective on the gap between high culture and popular entertainment.
Florentina Holzinger’s work explores the different modes of female representation and questions established norms of women’s physicality. Her shows are intensely physical and celebrate the full expression of resistance and vitality: creative, sexual, physical, and humorous.
The show contains scenes depicting self-inflicted injuries.
