What Moves You

Lil Buck was born in Chicago but shortly after moved to Memphis, where he spent much of his childhood and teenage years and learned his first ‘Memphis Jookin’ street dance steps. He joined various dance groups and studied ballet at the New Ballet Ensemble. At the age of 17 he worked with rapper Jai Armmer and recorded dance moves for a Memphis Jookin DVD series. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he was involved in projects with Janelle Monaé and joined the cast of Madonna’s MDNA World Tour. In 2011 he joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma to dance The Dying Swanat several European venues, most notably the Fondation Vuitton Museum. More recently, he worked with the Martha Graham Dance Company, for whom he choreographed Lamentation Variation.
In What Moves You,Lil Buck and cellist Mihai Marica challenge the limits of the creative engagement between dance and music, combining street dance’s free movements with the rigor of Bach and various contemporary composers.
