Sebastião Salgado

The ”la Caixa” Foundation, in collaboration with BPI and the Lisbon City Council, brings a traveling exhibition for the first time to Lisbon, with free access. It is part of the Arte na Rua program which aims at democratizing the access to art. This program aims to transform the public space into an open-air museum and bring the work of internationally renowned artists to the public. By removing the works from their usual place in museums and exhibition halls and mixing them with the daily scenario of the cities, access is democratized and art is brought closer to people.
The place chosen to receive the works of Sebastião Salgado was the historic area of Lisbon, next to the Arco da Rua Augusta. The Génesis photographic exhibition focuses on the natural world and invites us to ask ourselves about our current lifestyle and its impact on the planet’s natural resources.
After almost three decades of reflection on the dramas and tragedies of humanity, the renowned Brazilian photographer started this project in 2004. The project is centered on our planet’s nature.
The exhibition consists of 38 black and white photographs and shows landscapes, animals and people who managed to escape the influence of the modern world in polar regions, tropical forests and savannas, scorching deserts, mountains covered by glaciers and lonely islands.
