Sarah Affonso
Os Dias das Pequenas Coisas / The Days of Small Things
This is one of two exhibitions revisiting the life and work of Sarah Affonso (Lisbon, 1899-1983) to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of the modernist artist. The two exhibitions were assembled as a dialogue, in a partnership between the National Museum of Contemporary Art and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (‘Sarah Affonso e a Arte Popular do Minho‘), and offer the first comprehensive and critical perspective on the legacy of an artist who, although recognized and inscribed in the history of Portuguese art, remains largely unknown to the general public and circumscribed to the status of Almada Negreiros’ wife. ‘Os
Dias das Pequenas Coisas’ (‘The Days of Small Things’) addresses her oeuvre as a whole. Offering a biographical and creative journey through Sarah Affonso’s world, the exhibition delves into the artistic background of a multifaceted artist whose work covers a wide range of drawing styles, painting and embroidery, and which bears a very specific relationship with the idea of landscape.
