Shostakovich’s 7th

Honoured in 2016 with the Salzburg Festival Young Conductor’s Award, Aziz Shokhakimov has had a meteoric rise. Since then, he has become an obligatory presence in the world’s most prestigious concert halls. At Gulbenkian Music he will be conducting two major works from his repertoire: Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7. The Firebird is one of the finest examples of Stravinsky’s ability to fuse symphonic language and Russian folk music, while Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 is a hopeful piece composed during the Siege of Leningrad in 1941.
