Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi, by Puccini

This new production revisits two contrasting visions of the human condition: the poignant tragedy of Suor Angelica and the unrestrained comedy of Gianni Schicchi. They are the second and third parts of Il Trittico (1918), Giacomo Puccini’s operatic trilogy.

At the center of the first opera is the figure of Sister Angélica, who, as penance for a pregnancy that tarnished the family name, was forced to take the veil, renouncing her own child. A visit from her aunt to the convent will precipitate a new humiliation and the most devastating of losses.

Gianni Schicchi introduces us to the famous character of Florentine tradition: the cunning and manipulative “life-scrounger” who, called upon to resolve a family dispute over an inheritance, ends up turning the tables in his favor.
