Miriam Cahn

Miriam Cahn (Basel, 1949) is a prominent figure on the European contemporary art scene. Her work has received widespread critical and institutional acclaim in recent years, following important exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Haus der Kunst (Munich), Documenta 14 (2017) and Venice Art Biennale (1984 and 2022).

Miriam Cahn’s artistic practice, in which painting and drawing feature prominently, but also includes sculpture, installation, video and photography, explores topics related to her objection to all forms of oppression and reaction to current social and political issues, including gender violence, migratory problems and armed conflicts. Her work is strongly imbued with the motivations, attitudes and discourses that marked the feminist movements of the 1970s and 80s. What looks at us is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Portugal.
