Jacques Rozier Cycle

French filmmaker Jacques Rozier (1926-2023) was, despite a body of work that includes around 30 feature films and short films, a lesser-known name in contemporary cinema. His work, which marked the history of cinema from the end of the 1950s onwards, is recognised as important but, inexplicably, little publicised. In 2018, Cinemateca Portuguesa, in the context of IndieLisboa festival, gave visibility to Jacques Rozier’s work with a retrospective.

A new retrospective is being presented by Leopardo Filmes, showing five feature films, in restored prints, and a diptych of short films. The programme includes Adieu Philippine (1962), one of the iconic titles of the Nouvelle Vague, which reflects Rozier’s free and creative spirit. The filmmaker’s stories, which are often set during holidays or travel, almost always feature the sea and water. However, the lightness of the environments and circumstances does not hide the harshness of reality. Rozier’s summer inspiration opens the summer season at Nimas Cinema, from July 3.
