We’ll always have Michael Curtiz

Michael Curtiz (1886-1962) made one of the most famous films in the history of cinema, Casablanca, which ended up hiding the rest of his vast work (one hundred and sixty-seven films, made between 1914 and 1962).

Curtiz was born in Budapest under the name Mihály Kertész, which he used to sign almost all the films he directed before emigrating to Hollywood. It was then that he began to sign as Michael Curtiz, following the established rule of Americanizing his name. The filmmaker would spend his entire American career at Warner Bros., with the exception of four films in his final period.

The retrospective dedicated to Michael Curtiz by the Cinemateca Portuguesa will run from February to June and will include more than eighty films, covering half a century of cinema, from 1914 to 1960.
