Christmas Concerts at TNSC

São Carlos Theater (TNSC) celebrates the holiday season with three concerts – on December 18, 22 and 23, always at 8 pm – and a diverse lineup: Brass and Percussion, Choral, and Instrumental. The concerts will be performed by the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos Choir.

On December 18, at 8 pm, the Brass and Percussion Group of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, conducted by José Eduardo Gomes, will perform an eclectic program ranging from 18th-century composers (Bach) to contemporary works (Hazell). The concert will end with a short medley specifically arranged for this group, in which the audience will recognize some of the most popular American Christmas songs since the last century: Sleigh Ride, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Jingle Bells , and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

On December 22, at 8 pm, São Carlos Theater will host a Christmas Concert by the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos Choir and the soloists Susana Gaspar (soprano) and Cátia Moreso (mezzo-soprano), conducted by João Paulo Santos. Held just a few days before Christmas, the concert will feature works by major 19th-century Italian, German and French composers, capturing the spirit of this festive season and offering a romantic Christmas. Featuring Gounod, Mendelssohn and Rossini, the program will end with one of the best-loved Christmas carols on the planet: Adolphe Adam’s Minuits, chrétiens. Although better known by the English title O Holy Night, the work is based on a French text by Placide Cappeau focusing on the beauty of Christmas Eve.

On December 23 the TNSC will host a Christmas Concert by the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the violinists Pedro Meireles and Alexander Stewart, conducted by Antonio Pirolli. A journey through European instrumental music from the end of the 17th century to the last quarter of the 18th century. The concert will start with a piece by Arcangelo Corelli. His Concerto grosso in G minor op. 6, no. 8 was probably written in the 1780s and contains the indication that it was “fatto per la notte di Natale”. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins is one of the German composer’s most famous works and is also considered a Baroque masterpiece. To close the concert, one of Mozart’s best-loved works – the “Prague” Symphony (Symphony No. 38 in D Major K. 504).
